Post, Categories, and Tags in WordPress

In this post, we will see what is the Post, Category, and Tag. How to create them, and Why they are used.

What is Post?

Post is basically an article or piece of information on your site. They are also known as Blog Posts.

All Posts

As you can see just below the Dashboard there is a Posts option. When you click on it you will get to see the All Posts option. Click on it and on the right-hand side you can see the list of posts you have created. If you want to create a new post you can click on Add New button. In the list, you can see all the posts of different statuses. From here you can delete, update the posts. To delete or update click a particular post and select the operation from the Bulk Actions dropdown and then click on Apply. You can filter the post according to date and category.

Add New

To add a new post you can click on Add New from Posts options. After clicking on Add New you will get to see the editor. You can create your posts using this editor. The editor provides various features such as adding images, links, lists, tables, and many more.

I have given the title at the top and written some example text. You can add different options using that Add(plus) Button. As you can see we get the block of elements we want to add to our post. You can search and explore various elements. After creating your post you can save that post as a draft, you can preview it, and you can directly publish it. Before publishing on the right-hand side of the editor, you will get to see several options. You get them by clicking on the Setting logo which is beside the Publish button.

Status & Visibility defines the post visibility and publishing date. You can schedule the date of publishing by clicking on that Immediately link.

Permalink gives the URL of your post. It basically takes the title of your post and converts it into url like shown below.

Categories are the term used when we group particular types of posts. Like Tutorial can be a category where you can have tutorial related posts. The category is more general. Below as you can, you can select one or more post categories. If you want to create a new category you can click on create a new category and create one.

Tag is the other way to group your posts. But tags are more specific than Category. You can assign posts to the same tag if they have similarities regarding that tag.

Featured Image is the image shown at the top of the post. It is a cover image that shows the information regarding the post.

An excerpt is a short description of the post. It can also help to rank your post on google.

Discussion is the tab where you can choose if anyone can comment on your post or not. Other options allow pingbacks & trackbacks. Pingbacks mean when any person adds another person’s post link in his/her post. WordPress sends notifications to that blogger whose post link is added. Trackbacks do the same thing but pingback is better than traceback.

Categories

In the Posts option, you get the third option as Categories. When you click on it you will get a page to do the operations related to categories.

In the category section, you can add new categories. The default existing category is Uncategorized. You can create one parent category and add other categories as child categories.

Add New Category:- It is an operation that allows us to create a new category. You can enter a Category name, It’s slug(if you did not give any value then it will be autogenerated), Parent Category is a category you can choose from existing category and Description will be related to category.

After that, you can do operations such as edit and delete. As shown in the table there is category name, description, slug, and count. The count is the number of posts having that category.

Tags

Tags are like categories only. But the major difference is you can group your posts using categories generally whereas with tags you can group them in more detail.

When you click on the Posts option you get Tags as the fourth option.

Add New Tag:- This Will allow you to add a new tag. You can write tag name, slug(always lower-case), and description.

You can see the tags till now on the right-hand side table. From there you can delete the tag or edit the tag. I have added one tag i.e lorem ipsum. In the table, you can the name, description, slug, and count of posts that contain that tag.
